Janim
The Janim are the least visually distinctive of the Thuim, and they have built the continent’s most advanced scholarly and technological culture. They survived thousands of years of Nyl enslavement, developed the most extensive institutional knowledge on the continent, and then invented the gun.
They originate from the Shattered Lands, a continent destroyed during the cataclysm known as the Shattering. The Elkyr brought them, along with the Nyl, to the Remnant Continent during that disaster.
Appearance
Section titled “Appearance”Among the Thuim, the Janim carry the fewest immediately visible markers. No metallic skin, no glowing eyes, no beast traits. They are slightly taller on average. Their distinguishing traits are physiological rather than visible: extra kidneys, extra liver lobes. These traits make them resilient to bodily strain in ways other lineages are not.
A Janim is the lineage easiest to overlook at a glance.
The Law of Elasticity
Section titled “The Law of Elasticity”The Janim lineage polarity is Elasticity: rapid restoration and refreshment of body and Ren.
A Janim Rennim recovers from strain, injury, and Ren expenditure at a rate that would be extraordinary in most other lineages. Where another Rennim might need rest and time after pushing their limits, a Janim snaps back. The polarity’s name is precise: the Janim body does not heal from damage so much as return to form.
Combined with their extra organs, which provide additional physiological redundancy, the Janim are built to survive sustained pressure.
Culture & Society
Section titled “Culture & Society”Janim culture values individual freedom, family, faith, and education. These are not in tension with each other in Janim thought. They are understood as a unified set, each reinforcing the others. A person who is educated is better equipped to exercise meaningful freedom. A person grounded in faith and family is better equipped to form stable communities.
This has produced a strong institutional tradition. Janim cities tend toward scholarship and complex governance. Their academies, libraries, and research institutions are among the most developed on the continent. The Gate of Zerathrain, one of the primary institutions for Rennim training, is a Janim institution.
The Janim are the most technologically advanced lineage. One year ago, a Janim scholar named Gresin Orin at the Gate of Zerathrain invented Ren Exerters, devices that allow the mechanical projection of Ren effects. The technology is not yet widespread, but it exists, and it is going to change things.
History
Section titled “History”The Janim were enslaved by the Nyl for thousands of years in the Shattered Lands. The enslavement ended following a cataclysm, recorded only in Janim scholarly texts. This history is not distant or abstract. It is the defining event that sits behind every Janim-Nyl interaction on the Remnant Continent today.
Mutual distrust between the two peoples runs deep in both directions. Janim scholars are careful to document this history thoroughly. Nyl cultural tradition tends to omit it.
Relations with Other Peoples
Section titled “Relations with Other Peoples”The Janim are broadly welcoming of other lineages, with one significant exception: those with Nyl blood receive the accumulated weight of thousands of years of history. This is not a universal attitude, but it is common enough to define the texture of Janim-Nyl relations across the continent.
Among themselves, Thylini with most mixed heritage are accepted without particular concern. A Thylini with Nylvish blood is a more complicated matter.
