Ren

Ren is an energy that exists through and alongside reality. It is latent will, ideals, beliefs, and intent. It aligns with concepts, phenomena, and matter of all kinds, and it is structured into patterns at a particulate level. Ren is invisible and immaterial. It cannot be perceived with ordinary senses.

Ren is not magic in any common understanding of the word. There are no spells, no arcane disciplines. Ren is a real energy: it can be accumulated, stored, and depleted. But what determines how it expresses, and how much a person can hold and wield, is not training or talent in any ordinary sense. Ren mirrors the person who wields it. It is personal, value-driven, and inseparable from identity. Those who wield Ren wield themselves.

The Eight Laws

Ren does not behave arbitrarily. Scholars of the Gate have long observed that it follows eight fundamental principles, each of which corresponds to the innate attunement of one of the seven lineages.

The eighth law, Emergence, only is accessible when one has all of the other lineages - this is what makes you theridim.

Rennim and Renak

No one is born a Rennim. The ability to wield Ren is awakened, not inherited. Any person can potentially become Rennim. Most never do.

Rennim make up roughly one in a thousand of the general population. The rarity is not incidental: it shapes every social structure in every nation. A Rennim is not simply a person who can fight differently. They are categorically apart from ordinary life, in the way that ancient martial traditions understood cultivators in Wuxia and Xianxia to be apart. Nations, guilds, religious sects, noble houses, and criminal organizations all orient themselves in relation to Rennim, whether through recruitment, control, fear, or worship.

Those who cannot wield Ren are called Renak. The line between Renak and Rennim is not one of blood or destiny. It is a line anyone might cross, given the right conditions — or the wrong ones.

Awakening

The first moment of Ren contact is almost never gentle. Awakening is typically triggered by an extremely potent emotion or an intense, often desperate experience: grief, terror, fury, starvation, the death of someone close. The body begins to sense something it never could before. Most people who awaken have no framework for what is happening to them. The sensation is alien. Without guidance, it can be as dangerous as it is transformative.

Wielding Ren is talked about in several ways. Whether discussed as belief, ideals, will, or intent, it very much mirrors its user. It’s not inborn, and is difficult to learn and master. Whether from means, opportunity, time, or experience, Rennim are no strangers to challenge just in the process of becoming someone who can use Ren.

How People Learn

There is no standard path. The Gate of Zerathrain in Dosharen offers the most formalized training on the continent, but most Rennim never set foot there. They learn through faction or sect training shaped to serve an organization’s needs, through military standardization, through direct apprenticeship, or through religious and academic study. Some find forbidden texts. Some learn alone, slowly, out of survival necessity, feeling for what does not kill them and doing it again.

Self-taught practitioners tend to be experimental and scarred in ways others are not. Those trained by institutions tend to be efficient and limited in the same ways their institutions are. Neither path produces better Rennim. They produce different ones.

The process and major steps of advancement

Learning Ren starts with sensing and moving it. Next is establishing a continuous circulation throughout your body. After that comes solidifying a core. The next realm occurs when you create a set of cores to mirror the pattern of your ren signature. The last phase that mortals can reach for is to create sets of cores to then mirror the pattern of your Ren.

The realms are: Void (0) -> Spark (1) -> Flame (2) -> Star (3) -> Constellation (4) -> Galaxy (5).

Each of these comes with an increase in the density of your Ren, or the general strength of your will. Whether it’s a will to understand, to convince, or to harm, your intent works and influences reality passively more and more as your realm increases. Opposing a higher realm opponent is a death sentence in most cases, as their vast wills make it so things naturally hurt them less, they regenerate faster, and reality subtly acts to make their wills come true. Beware.

As you learn to use Ren, guidance and care are paramount to progression. Improper movement or technique can cause you to severely harm yourself, crippling damage, or even deformities. Most don’t learn Ren on their own, and those who do go slow and steady.

Realms

As a Rennim cultivates, they progress through stages of depth called Realms. Each represents a structural change in how Ren is held and circulated in the body, not simply a quantity of power accumulated.

2	Flame	A stable, autonomous circulation of Ren is established. Competent. Capable of independent missions.
3	Star	A core forms: a stable, condensed center of Ren. Competent. The highest tier most practitioners ever reach.
4	Constellation	Multiple cores in an established pattern. Formidable by any ordinary standard.
5	Galaxy	The mortal limit. Full sets of core patterns. A Galaxy-realm Rennim is a force that reshapes whatever ground they stand on.
6	Singularity	Beyond the mortal limit. Theorized. Perhaps achieved, only achievable by spirits or Yndryr.

Advancement cannot happen through discipline alone. To break into a higher Realm, a practitioner needs exposure to Ren of greater density than their body currently holds: beast cores, Ren crystals, refined elixirs, or immersion in high-density Ren environments. This creates one of the defining tensions of life in Ithasen. The gap between any two Realms is not a matter of degree. A practitioner who faces someone a full Realm above them is not at a disadvantage. They are in danger.

Values and Polarities

Ren does not respond to technique alone. It responds to the person using it.

Every Rennim holds a set of values: the things they have decided, through living, actually matter. These values are not abstract preferences. They are the foundation of identity, tested and shaped by experience. And they are the foundation of Ren. A practitioner’s Ren does not simply respond to their will in general; it responds to what they are willing for, and why.

Polarities are the specific concepts through which a Rennim expresses a value. They are, more precisely, visualizations and associations: the particular image, sensation, or idea that a value calls up in a given person. Two practitioners who both hold Justice as a core value might wield entirely different polarities. One sees justice as Severance, the clean cut that ends a wrong. Another sees it as Judgement, the weight of verdict and consequence. A third sees it as Conflict, the necessary collision that forces accountability. The value is the same. The association is not.

This means two practitioners who wield the same polarity do not wield the same thing. Flame tied to Faith is a different expression than Flame tied to Anger. The Ren responds to what the concept means to the person holding it.

The depth of that association determines power. A value lived through, tested, and chosen again under pressure gives stronger access than one held by habit or inheritance. When a person’s values shift because of what they have experienced and decided, their Ren shifts with it. Polarities that no longer reflect who they are may become inaccessible. New ones, tied to what they have become, open.

This is what scholars call Ren’s mirror quality: it reflects back what you are. It cannot be faked. It cannot be optimized independent of who you are willing to become.

Why Polarities Change Spirits

Spirits are not separate beings who happen to share a concept with a polarity. A spirit is a coalescence of a concept, a polarity of Ren that has accumulated enough will and identity to become conscious. The spirit of Flame is not merely associated with fire. It is fire, at the level of fundamental Ren structure.

When a Rennim wields a polarity, they engage with that concept through the specific lens of their value and association. They are not borrowing a concept. They are asserting a particular version of it: what the concept means to them, expressed at the level of Ren. When that engagement reaches a spirit, it does not simply interact with the spirit from the outside. The Rennim’s version of the concept presses against the spirit’s own desires or other influences on the spirit. What the practitioner believes Flame is begins to become part of what Flame is and how that spirit is working through the remnant continent now.

This is why the relationship between a Rennim and a spirit is transformative rather than contractual. There is no agreement that leaves both parties intact. Something shifts in the spirit based on what the Rennim has made of the concept it embodies.

Categories of Polarity

Polarities span a wide range of concepts. They are organized into the following categories:

There are many named polarities, and new polarities are being born, the most recent in the remnant continent being technology.

Most Rennim wield a handful of polarities across their life. Those who wield many widely are unusual; those who take a single polarity to an extreme depth are not.

Texture

Ren circulation is not uniform. It has a texture: a quality of stability that varies from person to person, and represents how influence as a law permeates in every rennim - how much a user’s will influences and is influenced by the world.

Volatile	Barely stable. Output is less predictable.
Rampant	Unstable. Produces outsized effects in both directions.

Texture is not a reflection of character. A Tranquil circulation does not indicate virtue. A Rampant circulation does not indicate corruption.

Most of the world disagrees. In nearly every nation, Tranquil Ren is associated with discipline, integrity, and trustworthiness. Rampant Ren is associated with danger, instability, and poor moral character. These associations are embedded in law, religion, and social expectation. A Rennim with Rampant texture will find doors closed that would be open to them otherwise, regardless of what they have actually done.

The people of Ithasen built their assumptions about Ren texture from observation of behavior, not understanding of cause. The association is not meaningless: extreme emotional instability and extreme Ren instability do co-occur in some cases. But correlation has been mistaken for identity, and the mistake has had real consequences for how Rennim are treated and how they understand themselves.

Awareness

Ren cannot be seen with ordinary eyes. Rennim develop an additional sense as the entry point for them to begin weilding Ren: Awareness. It allows them to perceive Ren density in the environment, and at closer range or greater focus, the specific polarities or Ren texture another practitioner carries.

Awareness has social implications beyond combat. It exists on a spectrum:

Suppressed: Ren held inward. The default state in most social contexts. Extended detection by another practitioner reveals realm. This is the polite posture, the equivalent of keeping your hands visible.

Cloaked: Appearing to have no Ren at all. Useful for concealment. Understood, in social contexts, as deliberate hiding.

Extended: Scanning the environment. A practitioner using Extended Awareness is actively reading everyone nearby. Other extended practitioners will notice. In most cultures, extending awareness in a public space without reason is considered invasive at best and aggressive at worst. Extended allows you to detect Realm.

Focused: Full attention concentrated on a specific person. Reveals their realm, texture, and polarities. This is considered deeply intrusive. Focusing on someone without combat context is widely understood as a threat or a declaration of hostile intent. Doing it without warning is likely to provoke a confrontation.

Awareness etiquette varies by nation and faction, but the underlying logic is consistent: Ren perception gives access to information about another person that they have not chosen to share. The conventions around it are, at root, about consent and respect.

Spirits and Ren

Spirits are coalescences of ideas and concepts, born from divine or collective will. They are, in the terms scholars use, polarities of Ren with amalgamated consciousness: a concept or set of closely related concepts that has become aware of itself.

When Rennim are described as contractors of spirits, what this means is not a formal agreement. The relationship transforms the spirit’s nature. The user does not employ the spirit. They change what it is.

Spirit Descent is the act of allowing a spirit to inhabit a mortal body and gain physical form. It requires a Rennim to perform a sacrifice using Daruner blood. Several spirits, named in religious traditions as Thasatur, Ingridrid, and Parthil, desire to descend and rule. The cults that serve them work to facilitate this. The Yrialin’s mission is explicitly concerned with preventing it.
