The Gate of Zerathrain
The Gate of Zerathrain is the pinnacle of academic and martial Ren study within the republic of Dosharen. While it presents an outward face of scholarly pursuit, its true nature is that of a “monster factory,” producing individuals who function as walking siege engines.
Overview
Section titled “Overview”The Gate is old, insular, and obsessively research-driven. While it presents itself as an academic institution, no one mistakes it for a harmless one.
The Gate maintains multiple internal branches, each dedicated to extreme specializations of Ren theory, application, and control. Much of what they study never leaves their halls. What does escape tends to reshape how Ren is understood everywhere else, and now, stands to revolutionize warfare.
No ruler, guild, or sect dares openly offend the Gate. Those who survive its education inevitably become monsters: Battlefield-level threats capable of overwhelming armies, breaking formations, and rewriting engagements.
Gate graduates are rare in the wider world, but unmistakable. Their presence changes how wars are planned, how cities defend themselves, and how other institutions define excellence.
Core Philosophy and Values
Section titled “Core Philosophy and Values”The Gate is obsessively research-driven, focusing on the deep mechanics of Ren theory and its practical, often destructive, application.
- Knowledge (Primary): The pursuit of truth and understanding at any cost. Graduates are scholars whose studies “leave craters”.
- Mastery/Growth: Continuous self-improvement and refinement of Ren technique to achieve battlefield-level dominance.
- Order/Discipline: The structured application of Ren. Education involves extreme specialization and rigorous academic study before execution.
- Innovation: Reshaping how Ren is understood globally through experimental findings.
- Power: Being able leverage Ren to do great things
Polarities
Section titled “Polarities”Polarity study at the Gate is organized by department. Below Flame, every student works from a shared foundation in the Intersection. At Core Formation they declare a department, and their polarity training narrows to its domain. The mappings below show where each polarity is taught and researched. They do not limit what an individual student happens to wield.
Common Foundations (Intersection)
Section titled “Common Foundations (Intersection)”Before specialization, all students drill a shared martial standard regardless of eventual department: Division, Piercing, and Protection. Every Gate graduate is expected to handle these competently.
By Department
Section titled “By Department”| Department | Polarities |
|---|---|
| Epistemology | Thought, Knowledge, Truth, Secrets, Writing |
| Logic | Order, Randomness, Growth, Ruin, Heat, Light, Sound, Space, Gravity, Kinetics, Electromagnetism |
| Materials | Earth, Metal, Glass, Wood, Water, Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma |
| Animation / Projection | Illusion, Dreams, Spirit, Names, Death |
| Biology | Blood, Life, Death, Plants, Animals, Poison |
| Exertion | Division, Piercing, Protection, Severance, Conflict, Trajectory |
Death is studied in two departments. Biology treats it as cessation and the boundary of healing; Animation treats it as raw material, the dead given form. The two are known to feud over it.
The Gate’s most prized work sits at the exotic edge of Materials: the Ren exerters, constructed devices that channel Ren without a living wielder. This research is what stands to revolutionize warfare, and it is much of why the Gate guards its halls so closely.
What the Gate does not publicly acknowledge is that it is not first to this work. The Okoi have been building Ren-driven devices for generations longer, and they guard a lead the Gate cannot measure from outside their walls. The Gate’s scholars believe themselves the vanguard of a coming age because the Okoi have let them: the city-states sell results and never methods, and a Janim institution convinced of its own primacy is no threat to an Okoi secret. How far ahead the Okoi truly are is a question the Gate has not learned to ask.
Departments and Curriculum
Section titled “Departments and Curriculum”The Gate teaches by Realm, not by year. A student’s body can only attempt what its Realm permits, so what one is allowed to study is gated by how far one has climbed. Academic rank runs alongside this as a separate ladder. Rank tracks research output, examination, and contribution, and it correlates with Realm without being bound to it. A Spark-Realm theorist in Epistemology can outrank a Flame-Realm peer. In Exertion the reverse is normal, where raw Realm earns standing and academic rank lags behind it. The two departments quietly disdain each other’s hierarchies.
The Gate does not shape a student’s worldview. It is an academy, not a forge of beliefs. The monsters it produces are those who survive a punishing climb with their polarities intact, fueled by the cores, crystals, and elixirs the Gate rations by rank, contribution, and patronage. Selection is brutal. Instruction is neutral.
The Intersection
Section titled “The Intersection”The Intersection is the unspecialized core. It owns the lower Realms, co-teaches the threshold, and runs the cross-cutting courses every student takes for as long as they remain.
- Void (Candidate): The Codex is taught first, before any lecture. Then Sensing and Moving: perceiving Ren density, texture, and polarity, and moving Ren within the body without crippling injury. Literacy in the Eight Laws and the full polarity taxonomy. Reading one’s own signature. The Candidate phase carries no elective coursework. Study is entirely prescribed: Ren Application Theory, Lineage Studies, Anatomy and Biology, Gate Conduct and Protocol, Combat Application, and Awareness Studies. Elective study opens at Scholar standing.
- Spark (Scholar): Establishing continuous Circulation. The mathematics of ability construction. Drilling the four Awareness states under supervision. A student’s first constructed abilities. Texture control under stress.
- Flame (Scholar / Senior Scholar): Core Formation, the point at which a signature begins to matter and the student declares a department. The Intersection retains them for the mandatory martial standard, sparring under the Codex, research methodology, and the history and ethics commons.
- Star and above: The Intersection recedes into colloquia, cross-disciplinary seminars, and the administration of thesis work. By now the student lives in their branch.
The Specialist Departments
Section titled “The Specialist Departments”Specialization begins at Flame and runs to the mortal ceiling. Each department teaches the same three-rung climb in its own idiom: Flame grounds the theory, Star applies it at scale, and Constellation produces the capstone that leaves a crater.
Epistemology
Section titled “Epistemology”The study of knowing: truth, secrets, and the written word. Its graduates are seers, analysts, cryptographers, and battlefield intelligence.
- Flame: Mastery of signature-reading. The Focused Awareness state as a trained discipline. Written constructs in Ren ink.
- Star: Reading a battlefield, a crowd, or a fortress as a single pattern. Warding knowledge and breaking the wards of others. The ethics of forced reading, which presses hard on the Codex.
- Constellation: The seer who resolves an engagement before it is fought.
The lawful processes that govern structure and the phenomena that obey them: order and randomness, increase and decay, and the energetic forces.
- Flame: Order and Randomness as applied force. Tightly controlled energy projection through Heat, Light, and Sound.
- Star: Probability manipulation. Resonance and harmonic theory. Large energetic constructs and the lawful scaling of Growth and Ruin.
- Constellation: Rewriting local order. Catastrophic precision energy.
Materials
Section titled “Materials”Fabrication and the substances of the world. The birthplace of the Ren exerters.
- Flame: Material polarities. The basics of Ren ink and Ren stone. A student’s first constructs. Forging.
- Star: Exerter theory. Kerim and Turim work, often by posting to the Terima campus. Fortification and self-sustaining constructs.
- Constellation: The exerter capstone: the siege engine, the walking fortress.
Animation / Projection
Section titled “Animation / Projection”Manifesting the unreal and giving form to what has none: illusion, dream, spirit, and the dead.
- Flame: Illusion fundamentals. Projection across range. A student’s first summons.
- Star: Dreamscape work. Sustained area illusion. Autonomous constructs raised from spirit or from the dead.
- Constellation: Battlefield-scale unreality, where armies are made to fight phantoms.
Biology
Section titled “Biology”Ren in living things: healing, augmentation, and affliction.
- Flame: The anatomy of Ren circulation in the body. Healing fundamentals. Plant and animal attunement.
- Star: Augmentation of the living. Poison and plague constructs. Beast-core work and beast-handling.
- Constellation: Mass healing or mass affliction. The capstone at the boundary of Life and Death.
Exertion
Section titled “Exertion”Enforcement and the martial application of Ren. The most literal walking siege engines, and the Gate’s own discipline arm.
- Flame: Circulation in motion. The Intersection’s martial standard, elevated. The fusion of weapon and polarity.
- Star: Formation warfare. Single-combat mastery. Protection raised to the scale of a line.
- Constellation: The body that breaks armies.
Logic and Exertion can look redundant where structures fail, but they divide by intent. Logic studies why a structure fails as a governed process and writes the theorem. Exertion makes it fail on a battlefield and is the hammer.
Satellite Postings
Section titled “Satellite Postings”The two satellite campuses are postings rather than departments. Terima draws its Senior Scholars and Fellows chiefly from Materials, for Kerim research. Famirosh draws from Epistemology and Materials both, for the Marathat studies that remain among the Gate’s most prestigious and difficult work.
Academic Ranks
Section titled “Academic Ranks”Advancement through the student ranks is assessed and announced without ceremony. Graduation is the exception.
Student Track
Section titled “Student Track”- Candidate: Has passed entry testing and entered the Gate’s program. Still under evaluation during the first phase of study.
- Scholar: The main body of the student population. Active coursework and ongoing research.
- Senior Scholar: Upper-level students. May serve as testing administrators during entry evaluations and assist in faculty research.
- Fellow: Graduate-level. Eligible for satellite postings. The final student rank before leaving the Gate or transitioning to faculty.
Faculty Track
Section titled “Faculty Track”- Lecturer: Junior faculty, often Fellows who chose to remain. Teach courses and contribute to research under senior oversight.
- Professor: Full faculty. Leads courses, runs independent research, and mentors students at all levels.
- Magister: Senior faculty leading a research branch or department. One of the most influential positions within the Gate.
Administration
Section titled “Administration”- Rector: The singular head of the Gate of Zerathrain. Presides over all academic and institutional decisions.
Graduation
Section titled “Graduation”The Gate marks the completion of a Fellow’s studies with a formal ceremony. It is not a public event. It takes place within the Gate, attended by faculty and current students, with the Rector presiding. The graduating Fellow is formally addressed, their work acknowledged, and their rank conferred. It is recognition and celebration.
Those who do not complete their studies leave quietly. The Gate does not broadcast failure. Given how selective entry is, washouts are rare, but they happen, and the silence around it carries its own weight.
Gate graduates are sought after. Most find their footing in one of a few directions: retained by noble houses as tutors or personal advisors, staying on at the Gate to continue their research, building infrastructure within Dosharen, taking work with the Eventide Brigade, or entering Dosharen’s parliament. The last path is common enough that a Gate education has become something close to an unspoken prerequisite for serious political ambition in the republic.
Headquarters
Section titled “Headquarters”The Gate’s primary campus is located in Gersan. It is a sprawling complex, old enough that portions of it predate the current republic. The main campus houses all core academic functions: lecture halls, research facilities, administrative offices, and student housing.
Two satellite campuses extend the Gate’s reach into highly specialized fields. Senior Scholars and Fellows working in these areas may be posted there for the duration of their research.
- Terima Campus: Dedicated to Kerim research, the study of Ren-infused stone in its many forms and applications.
- Famirosh Campus: Dedicated to Marathat Studies, the investigation of the ancient Marathat civilization and the Ren techniques they developed. One of the most prestigious and difficult specializations the Gate offers.
Entry Testing
Section titled “Entry Testing”The Gate does not recruit broadly. On rare occasions a professor may personally approach a promising individual, but there are no campaigns or outreach programs. Candidates present themselves.
Testing is administered by Professors, Senior Scholars, and Fellows. It evaluates candidates across three areas: physical capability, intellectual aptitude, and psychological resilience. Unique or rare polarities are noted favorably, as they signal research potential the Gate actively cultivates.
Admission is extremely selective. The Gate takes only the best Rennim in Dosharen, and the pass rate reflects that.
Awareness and Conduct (The Codex)
Section titled “Awareness and Conduct (The Codex)”The Gate is filled with Rennim, and every one of them can, in principle, read the others. Left unchecked, that would make the halls a place of constant, silent aggression. The Gate does not permit it. Conduct around Awareness is governed by a strict code, taught to every Candidate before their first lecture and enforced without regard for rank.
In all shared spaces, students and faculty hold their Awareness Suppressed. To walk the Gate broadcasting an Extended sense across other people, or to turn a Focused read on another person without their consent, is treated not as rudeness but as assault. The penalty is real and falls on Professors as readily as Candidates. Privacy of polarity is considered the foundation of trust within the institution, and the Gate guards it fiercely.
There is one sanctioned exception: consented evaluation. Entry testing and every later advancement assessment require the student to lower their guard and be read in full, formally, before witnesses, and on the record. These are the only moments a person’s complete signature is laid open to another. Sparring and sanctioned duels carry a narrower permission, limited to what the contest requires.
Cloaking, the deliberate masking of one’s Ren to appear mundane, is itself viewed with suspicion. A Rennim who registers as having no Ren in a place built to cultivate it invites questions no one wants asked.
A consequence of the code is that what remains publicly legible about any student is little more than their realm and their texture. Texture, therefore, is loud. The wider world’s prejudice, that a Rampant texture signals instability or corruption, follows students through the gates despite the Gate’s own scholars knowing the belief to be false. A Rampant Candidate is watched, quietly, no matter how the rules are written.
Student Life
Section titled “Student Life”Life at the Gate changes character as a student rises.
For Candidates and Scholars, the lower ranks, it is a grind. Days are structured around lectures, supervised circulation and technique drills, and research labor for senior members. Assessment is constant and announced without ceremony. Advisor politics begin early, since a Professor’s favor shapes which work a student is given and which resources they are allowed to touch. Washout is rare, the entry filter sees to that, but the pressure that produces it is not. The silence around those who leave is its own kind of teaching.
For Senior Scholars and Fellows, the upper ranks, the institution becomes something closer to a sect. Power concentrates here, and so does its pursuit. Access to the Ren materials that advance a practitioner’s Realm, the cores, crystals, and elixirs drawn from the Gate’s stores, is earned through rank, contribution, and the standing of one’s patron among the Magisters. Branch politics sharpen. Alliances form and dissolve around research, reputation, and the few satellite postings worth having. Beneath Dosharen’s civilized manners, the competition at this level is quietly lethal.
Housing follows rank. Candidates share austere quarters in the outer halls; the comfort of one’s rooms rises with one’s standing as plainly as the quality of one’s coat. Reputation is the currency that buys everything the stipend does not, and at the Gate it is made and unmade in assessment results, in whose research one is attached to, and in the duels that settle disputes the code will not let fester.
The Cycle
Section titled “The Cycle”The Gate runs on the tenday, the common working cycle across Dosharen. Eight days carry the full schedule of lectures, supervised drills, and research labor. The ninth and tenth are low days: no logged blocks, the lecture halls dark, the stores and administrative offices keeping shortened hours. The month’s twenty-nine or thirty days fall into roughly three of these cycles.
The low days are not a holiday so much as the slack the institution allows itself. Candidates and Scholars use them for private cultivation, errands into Gersan, worship, or the rest a punishing climb demands. Fellows and faculty use them to advance their own work and to clear the administrative backlog instruction leaves no room for. Assessments, hearings, and sanctioned duels are often set at the tail of a cycle so they fall against the low days rather than cutting into teaching. Attendance on the eight working days feeds the contribution and conduct ledger that gates a student’s rationed materials and a Fellow’s notice; a clean record of presence is among the cheapest standing a Candidate can hold.
The Uniform
Section titled “The Uniform”Gate uniforms are formal, precise, and unornamented. The standard garment is a structured, single-breasted coat in deep charcoal, cut close and fitted. Rank is communicated through insignia worked into the collar for students and the cuffs for faculty. Material quality scales with rank: a Candidate wears something functional and durable; a Magister or the Rector wears something whose quality is evident without announcing itself.
The silhouette is not military. It signals scholarship and discipline.
Known Members
Section titled “Known Members”To be expanded.
