The Marathat

The Marathat are a civilization known almost entirely through what they left behind. Their ruins predate every nation on the Remnant Continent and every empire that preceded them. The artifacts recovered from those ruins describe a society operating at a level of technological development that no current civilization has approached, let alone matched.

Who they were, where they came from, and what ended them are questions without settled answers. What is known is what they built.

Marathat sites vary considerably in preservation and scale, but recurring artifact categories have allowed scholars at the Gate of Zerathrain to develop a partial picture of their material culture.

Personal transit vehicles. Small, enclosed, Ren-powered conveyances built for individual or small-group travel at speeds that would be extraordinary by any current standard. Recovered units are non-functional, but their construction suggests Ren circulation systems far more refined than anything currently in production. The Gate has not been able to replicate the mechanism.

Suspension architecture. Ruins of elevated platforms, walkways, and structural sections that were not supported from below. The Ren suspension systems that held them are long since depleted, but the mounting points and anchor configurations make the original function clear. Some scholars have concluded that entire districts of Marathat cities were built above ground level, suspended by continuous Ren output.

Autonomous constructs. The most debated category. Certain recovered artifacts respond to Ren input in ways that suggest decision-making capacity: variable outputs, apparent recognition of context, behavior that does not reduce to simple mechanism. Whether the Marathat built constructs capable of something like independent reasoning, or whether scholars are misreading the function of complex but non-conscious systems, remains genuinely unresolved.

Environmental arrays. Large-scale artifacts designed to alter conditions across a significant area over extended time: soil composition, water access, atmosphere within an enclosed space. The principle is understood. The scale at which the Marathat operated it is not. Known examples have been found in varying states of activation.

Geothermal Ren extraction infrastructure. The most consequential find in terms of implications. Several sites show evidence of deep-shaft systems designed to harvest Ren from thermal sources far below the surface, at volumes that would dwarf any current extraction method. If the systems functioned as the evidence suggests, the Marathat had access to a continuous Ren supply that would make the resource constraints shaping every current nation essentially irrelevant.

No Marathat bodies have ever been recovered from any excavated site. This is not a gap in the archaeological record that time or decay explains adequately. The ruins contain furniture, tools, garments, personal effects, and food storage. They do not contain remains. Scholars have proposed explanations. None has achieved consensus.

The ruins also show no evidence of conflict. No weapons discharge, no structural collapse from impact, no barricades, no last-stand positioning of any kind. Whatever ended the Marathat, it did not look like a war from the inside.

The lineage of the Marathat is contested. The most widely held theories, based on the prevalence of Harmony-polarity enchantment in certain ruin sites, and the general use of Coalescence, is that the Marathat were Haqol or True Daruner. A minority position holds that the enchantment evidence is misleading and points to a different lineage entirely. No consensus has formed, and the absence of remains means the question cannot be settled biologically.

The Gate of Zerathrain maintains the largest active research program on Marathat technology. The Eventide Brigade has been involved in several recent excavation sites. Neither organization has published complete findings.
